“We need some global citizens/for some sit ins/again.” These are the words of the spoken word artist Drew Dellinger, whose poems have been quoted by lawmakers in Congress. This video, “Love in Action: Poet Drew Dellinger at Occupy Oakland,” was filmed last November at the Oakland General strike and is narrated by Drew, who calls on demonstrators to “incite insight,” not violence.
The Oakland General Strike saw close to 100,000 people come together in protest of wealth inequity and corporate plutocracy. This massive demonstration of solidarity with the Occupy Wall Street movement shut parts of the port of Oakland and celebrated the vision of a more just and humane society.
Filmed by documentary filmmaker Velcrow Ripper (Scared Sacred and Fierce Light), this short is another in his series chronicling the power of love in mass social movements.
