Occupy Fort Lauderdale may not be as active now as it was before the holidays, but the music lives on, thanks to Dr. Bob, also known as Robert Mitchell. As the chief songwriter for the group, he wrote and performed a dozen songs during Christmas and compiled the recordings into The Town Crier album for a fundraiser. One of the songs, “We Are The 99,” even became the official song of Occupy Fort Lauderdale, and Mitchell will be performing it at a labor rally later this month. All the tracks from The Town Crier are now available for free download.
The leaderless nature of the Occupy movement may have made it difficult for the group at Fort Lauderdale to stick together, although they were very productive until early this year. “Even if the movement doesn’t go any further, it got a lot of people reacting and got them away from the TV,” Mitchell said. He will continue to voice his opinions through his music, as one of his songs will be on the OWS May Day Mixtape and he has over 200 original songs and videos on YouTube.
