iPhone Revolution

iPhone Revolution
Tue, 5/8/2012

British-born Giles Clarke has shot thousands of images entirely on his iPhone.

“It was simply the ease of the iPhone that enabled me to get real close and remain discreet," he said. "I find the roughness and irregularities of the iPhone camera interesting and feel no less equipped than Alfred Stieglitz in the early 19th century here in New York. I try not to alter any part of the subject by my presence and find that larger cameras often simply just get in the way or may affect the subject response. This movement grew very quickly and I hope my pictures convey a little of the Occupy Wall Street spirit.”

It was that spirit that originally drew Giles to Liberty Square. “I arrived on September 18 in the early evening and became immediately enthralled," he recalled. "I was puzzled as to why the police where so prominent and immediately began shooting. I caught the tail end of a march and shot more pictures while listening to the General Assembly. There were so many things that night that seduced me; the human mic, the scrappy but piercingly poignant signs on the ground, the people gathered but ultimately it was the energy of the square that took me back almost everyday thereafter. The Occupy Movement began in Liberty Square and I was fortunate to be able to see the camp grow and witness this passionate group of people set the world alight in that first month. Set in shadow of Wall Street, Liberty Square and many of its inhabitants have since become good friends."

"The feeling of togetherness, the possibility of change and the resolutness and defiance of all the brave occupiers is what keeps me going," he added. "It’s really the only thing out there that is questioning these nebulous and selfish corporate behemoths."

prison reform, incarceration rates, private prisons, for-profit prisons, white supremacy, enslavement, climate justice, racial justice, Green New Deal

The year 2020 has caused many white people to realize we live in a racist system. The Green New Deal is about systemic change for all, and deconstructing racism must be front and central in this agenda.

coronavirus pandemic, Donald Trump, Boris Johnson, Jair Bolsonaro, COVID-19 deaths, downplaying coronavirus

By infecting three of the world’s most right-wing leaders, the coronavirus underscored not only the incompetence and irresponsibility of their governments – but the truth that their brand of populism doesn't keep people safe.

COVID-19, corporate bailouts, corporate welfare, corporate destruction

Corporations are not "too big to fail" and, when they commit crimes, they are not "too big to jail." As David Whyte writes in his new book, "Ecocide: Kill the Corporation Before It Kills Us," the moment is now to rein in out-of-control corporate power.

The world has lost an incredible thinker and doer. I have lost an amazing friend. A void exists where before it was filled with David's optimism, humour and joy.

Kevin fought to bring truth every day. We must not lose this struggle.
