ATTN: Episode 2 - Paying Attention with Robert Reich and Matthew Segal
Thu, 1/26/2017 - by Matthew Segal
This article originally appeared on ATTN:

"Everything I see from Donald Trump makes me worry about the future." Robert Reich is Chancellor's Professor of Public Policy at the University of California at Berkeley, and served as Secretary of Labor in the Clinton administration, for which Time Magazine named him one of the ten most effective cabinet secretaries of the twentieth century.

As part of ATTN:'s new series, Paying Attention, Reich and ATTN:'s editor-in-chief Matthew Segal sit down to discuss income inequality, labor unions and the federal minimum wage, as well as Donald Trump's picks for his new cabinet.

Much has happened in recent decades that can't be seen from Mr. Reich's office window.

Trump brings the Reagan Revolution to fruition. Since the 1980s, much work went into defining "interest groups," and pitting them against each other. Any concept of "the common good" has been rooted out of our culture. Bill Clinton successfully pitted middle class against poor, while the focus of the past decade has been on pitting the poor against each other by race. The majority of US poor are white, and Democrats and liberals successfully redefined them as a collection of ignorant, right wing slobs. Black people spit on them for their "white privilege." Divide, subdivide, conquer. Now what?

The year 2020 has caused many white people to realize we live in a racist system. The Green New Deal is about systemic change for all, and deconstructing racism must be front and central in this agenda.

coronavirus pandemic, Donald Trump, Boris Johnson, Jair Bolsonaro, COVID-19 deaths, downplaying coronavirus

By infecting three of the world’s most right-wing leaders, the coronavirus underscored not only the incompetence and irresponsibility of their governments – but the truth that their brand of populism doesn't keep people safe.

COVID-19, corporate bailouts, corporate welfare, corporate destruction

Corporations are not "too big to fail" and, when they commit crimes, they are not "too big to jail." As David Whyte writes in his new book, "Ecocide: Kill the Corporation Before It Kills Us," the moment is now to rein in out-of-control corporate power.

The world has lost an incredible thinker and doer. I have lost an amazing friend. A void exists where before it was filled with David's optimism, humour and joy.
