Buckling to demands of protesters, Whole Foods has announced that it will stop using prison labor by April of 2016. Currently, Whole Foods partners with a company called Colorado Correctional Industries (CCI), which boasted in its 2014 annual report that the company's “success is completely dependent on the business savvy of our staff and the dedication of our inmate workforce.”
The business savvy of their staff? Are they kidding? They are selling farm-raised Tilapia to soccer moms in Volvos at Whole Foods who will pay double the margin without even noticing – and using prisoners who make about .74 cents a day. Calling that "business savvy" is like calling a cotton plantation in the antebellum south an all expenses paid utopian commune. I’m sorry CCI, buy we have laws against importing products from foreign companies that use slave labor – why should we allow it in the United States?
